Step 1

Match the account and assets

Compare the same account type and the charges for the investments you would actually hold. A platform can price funds, shares and ETFs differently.

Step 2

Add activity-based costs

Use a realistic number of trades and add recurring extras. Telephone dealing, foreign exchange and transfer charges may sit outside the headline platform fee.

Step 3

Verify the live tariff

Fees and terms change. Confirm the current provider tariff and check the firm and permissions on the FCA Register before making a decision.

What the regulator highlights

Compare the total cost, not one headline number

The FCA says main platform and fund fees are generally identifiable, while activity-based costs such as telephone dealing and foreign exchange can be harder to locate. Its guidance tells firms to make costs easy to find and compare.

Common questions

Platform fee calculator FAQs

Is a flat platform fee always cheaper for a large portfolio?

Not automatically. The answer depends on the balance, the assets held, account fees, percentage caps, trading pattern and any charges that apply only to particular investments or account types.

What should I enter as the platform percentage fee?

Use the current annual percentage from the provider tariff for your account type and holdings. If the percentage charge has a cash minimum or cap, enter those separately rather than changing the percentage.

Should fund and ETF charges be included?

Yes, if you want a broader ongoing-cost comparison. Enter the ongoing fund or ETF charge for each option. The same investment charge may apply on both platforms, but it is useful to show it explicitly.

Does this calculator include investment growth?

No. It is deliberately a one-year snapshot at the balance entered. Use the separate investment fee calculator to illustrate how two all-in percentage fees could compound over a longer period.

Can I use the result to choose an investment platform?

The result is a cost comparison, not a recommendation. Check product range, account type, service, protection, access and the full live tariff, and confirm a firm on the FCA Register before acting.
